CHOR Youth & Family Services is a leading non-profit social service agency offering mental and behavioral health and education services to care for at-risk children, youth, and their families from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh with offices in Berks County, Bucks County, and the Greater Lehigh Valley.
Our goal is to provide a continuum of care, starting with the least restrictive services—including community-based programs, foster care and adoption, and specialized educational programs for children with emotional and behavioral issues—up through our specialized, trauma-informed, treatment-oriented residential environments for adolescents.
“Caring for the needs of Children and Families in crisis and preparing them for success in life, thereby strengthening the Quality of Life in the Communities we serve.”
1884 The City of Reading opened a day nursery for women on Franklin Street. Once the first motherless child was placed under their care, the home soon began serving the dual purpose of a day nursery and a foster home.
1888 The facility was outgrown and re-opened as the “Home for Friendless Children”.
In the following years, the home’s purpose expanded to provide temporary shelter and instruction to orphaned and destitute children, support for children whose parents were unable to care for them, and services that addressed the evolving needs of the community.
1947 With the intent of better describing the services provided and the children served, our name was changed to The Children’s Home of Reading.
2022 Through the powerful alliance of CHOR Youth & Family Services (Community-Based & PRTF Services), Edison Court (Community-Based & Specialized Residential Services), and Affinity (Specialized Foster Care & Community-Based Services), we proudly offer an unparalleled spectrum of care.
When you support The Children’s Home of Reading and the programs and services of CHOR Youth & Family Services, you send a powerful message to over 4,000 children and their families every year—that someone believes in them and is committed to helping them access the care they need during challenging times.
Together, we can continue to make a difference and provide help, hope, and opportunities for those in need of our care.
